The Forge, Wandin Blacksmiths
The Forge, Wandin BlacksmithsIt was in the USA that Paul began the exploration of his artistic side with papier mache. His first works focused on mythical and imaginary creatures as they had always held a fascination. On his return to Australia he was able to pursue his interest in sculpting. He attended life sculpting classes run by Matchum Skipper. Although he enjoyed working with clay, he wanted to explore other media and took classes in lost wax casting (bronze) with Jason Waterhouse.Casting bronze led to a desire to work with metal and an opportunity arose where he could learn the basic skills of blacksmithing. He continues to work as a blacksmith to date but combine other materials such as wood, stone and glass with the metal. He especially enjoys utilising discarded metal and giving it new life. The artists that have influenced Paul are H.R. Giger, Salvador Dali, Antoni Gaudi and Shawn Tan. The amazing photography of Karl Blossfeldt has also been an inspiration. Paul loves the organic flow of nature.Paul is currently a member of the Mont De Lancey Blacksmiths, the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, and the Contemporary Artists Society of Victoria
